Canada Cracking Down On Drug-Using Drivers

A recent study by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse found that 4.8% of those who responded to a survey admitted to driving within two hours of smoking marijuana.
"The report also said that young people who drive under the influence of marijuana don’t think they will get caught."
Young people often don't think their driving is as impaired by marijuana as it is by drinking.

School Board Revises Drug Policy

The North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School District (New Jersey) has revised its drug policies after a fierce debate that began in June of last year. Thirteen students were pulled from the school’s senior program for blood-alcohol testing. Teen Dies of Apparent Overdose

A West Vancouver (Canada) teenager who left her home after telling her mother that she was going to the movies was found dead later that night at the Edmonds SkyTrain station. The cause of death appeared to be a drug overdose.

Early Drug Use has Long-Term Consequences

A team of researchers from the U.S., Britain and New Zealand have found that teens who begin drinking or using drugs before age 15 are more likely to engage in risky behavior well into their 30s than are individuals who remained mostly sober until much later. Reports: Substance Abuse Services Fall Short in Maryland

A report commissioned by the Maryland General Assembly revealed that available services for substance abusers don't adequately meet the needs of the state's residents.
"The report says Maryland would have to admit 14,423 people to treatment programs each year to meet the need. In Prince George's County, the report says 4,606 more people each year require treatment than receive it."

Woman Gets Prison Sentence After Teen Overdoses

A Southern California woman who gave methadone to her 17-year-old daughter's friend was sentenced to six years in state prison as punishment for the girl's fatal overdose.

Inhalants Popular Among Pre-Teens

Results of a study released by the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition found that pre-teens are more likely to try inhalants than marijuana. This trend continued into the early teen years.

Teens Report that it's Easy to Get Methamphetamine

Some 25% of American teenagers report that it is easy or "somewhat" easy to obtain methamphetamine. However, the vast majority (77%) expressed disapproval of those who experiment with this popular street drug.

Parents Tolerate Drinking Among Teens Over 15

A new study by Health Canada concludes that parents tolerate drinking older teens but worry if their children start drinking before they are fifteen years old.

"A key transition point" occurs when young people enter high school, according to the authors of the study, which involved focus groups of teens and their parents in Winnipeg, Halifax, Montreal, Quebec and British Columbia.
